The 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program brings the District and territories to this popular circulating coin.  Six different designs make up this series, all produced in 2009, in this order:

  • District of Columbia
  • Commonwealth of Puerto Rico
  • Guam
  • American Samoa
  • US Virgin Islands
  • Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands

The image of the nation's first president, George Washington, will remain on the front of all six quarters in the new program.  The coins will use all the inscriptions standard for the quarter dollar.  Versions will also be made in 90% silver, but for collecting, not for general spending.

To find out more about these coins, check out:

  • For kids:  the United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change 2009 Quarters page.
  • For adults:  the 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program information page.

For educators, the United States Mint offers free lesson plans (for Kindergarten through sixth grades) based on the new quarter designs.  What a great opportunity to connect history with the coins in the very pockets of your students!
